Graduate School
Ug. This idea of graduate students really should not be encouraged (it's certainly not the way I was brought up to think of grad school nor, thankfully, does it reflect my experiences!). Thanks to Zuska for the reference.
"They're the cannon fodder of science. You throw them at problems that have no chance of being solved..."Ouch. Way to encourage students to, you know, succeed and continue to pursue research in the field!

I think that kind of attitude is prevalent in our field. My main criticism is that sure, experiments fail all the time and it's demoralizing, but you have to do enough investigation before you start experimenting and do enough projects in parallel to make sure you have some output. It's in the profs best interest to make sure everyone is publishing. It doesn't sound like they are. That's why the mood in the lab is so depressing.
